Long ago, Gaia married Uranus and gave birth to giants, the Titans. Cronus, the leader, possessed power over every creature on Earth.

"I will rule forever," he said, "And so it shall be."

Gaia, who foresaw the future, said, "One day, one of your own children will defeat you."

To prevent this, each time his wife gave birth, Cronus swallowed the child whole.

When Gaia realized Cronus's doings, she devised a plan.

Gaia replaced the next-born baby with a stone she wrapped in a blanket. Cronus swallowed the stone disguised as his son.

Gaia then carried the baby Zeus to Amalthea of Crete. "Care for Zeus as if he were your own," Gaia instructed. "Protect him from Cronus. He must never find this boy."

Amalthea took Zeus into her arms and into her heart. Then she gathered young men and trained them to protect Zeus.

"Whenever Zeus makes noise," Amalthea instructed, "you must be louder. No one must hear his cries. No one must know of his existence."

Zeus soon grew strong and powerful. Although he loved Amalthea and Crete, he longed for home.

When he got home, he faced Cronus, though Cronus had no idea this was his son.

"Leave my land," Cronus demanded, "or I will wage war against you."

The next day, Cronus was tricked into swallowing a potion that caused him to throw up the five children he had swallowed at their births一Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades and Poseidon.

Emerging from their father's mouth full grown, the children joined Zeus to fight Cronus.

As Gaia had predicted, Cronus was defeated, and so Zeus triumphed over his father and also over his siblings, for he was their rescuer.

Zeus crowned himself the god of the universe and divided the world among his brothers and sisters. Hestia was made goddess of the home; Poseidon, god of the sea; Demeter, goddess of the harvest; Hera, goddess of marriage and childbirth; and Hades, god of the underworld. ∥ュěFwWw.Fairy-tAlE.inFOμ∪ム

Zeus made a special place for the gods, Mount Olympus, and to honor Amalthea, he transformed her into a star to forever watch over the people of the world.
